Håkan Strand Belfast Revisited
In 1981, photographer Håkan Strand first encountered Belfast at the height of the Troubles— a period marked by sustained violence, political unrest, and deep societal division. It was a dizzying encounter with the city of Belfast which left memories that never faded. Decades later, following the peace agreement, Strand returned to the city to reexamine its landscape and the enduring imprint of conflict. The collection of photographs from Belfast portrays how thirty years of violent conflict and mistrust have shaped a society. Strand’s (b. 1959) images consider questions of identity, division, and coexistence, while exploring the complexities of human connection within a post-conflict society. The images tell the story of a troubled time, a fragile peace, and hope for the future. Belfast Revisited marks Strand’s second publication with Kehrer Verlag.
